Tip #1 – Burglarize Yourself
This sounds silly, but it’s one of the easiest ways to spot any weaknesses in the security of your home. When putting yourself in the position of an intruder, you’ll start to notice details you might not have seen before. These could be unlocked doors or windows, loose locks or handles on doors or open wiring attached to a security system.
It’s also a perfect opportunity to determine how your locks would hold up in case of an attempted break-in. Does your home have deadbolts? Can windows, or glass doors, be pried open? This activity is extremely eye-opening.
Tip #2 – Is Anybody Home?
In order to deter burglars, your home must appear occupied at all times. You do not necessarily need to be at home 24/7, but leaving on lights, TVs and background noises, etc., will help greatly with the security of your home.
This can consume a lot of energy, so you can always opt for a radio instead of a TV. Additionally, you can use timers to switch on lights and electronics.
You’ll also want to check out the lighting by your front door. The more well-lit the exterior and interior of your home, the less likely you’ll encounter a break-in.
Tip #3 – Change It Up
Unless you’ve truly had a home security scare, you may not know exactly what the protocol is for changing your locks. When should you change them, or how often?
There are quite a few variables that go into lock changes, but the general rule of thumb is to always change locks whenever there’s a big change. If you lose your keys, it’s always a good idea to change your locks. The same goes for moving into a new home. You can always do a re-key of your current locks, as well.
If you really want to get into it, you can always do some product research on certain types of locks you either currently have or might be interested in. Some newer, more modern locks even have smart home functions (i.e. locking your doors from your phone)! Aside from better security, it’s an excellent investment in the appearance of your home as well.
