What to Look for When Searching for a Locksmith
Ask for any credentials and/or certifications
Not every state requires locksmiths to be certified. Reputable locksmiths will have certification and licenses available regardless of the state requirements! Many credible locksmiths will also be associated with organizations like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) or Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA). These are great indicators to determine if a locksmith has the knowledge and expertise to handle any and all security tasks.
Review Available Services
Not all locksmiths are full-service, meaning some locksmiths may not be able to meet all of your security needs and concerns. If a locksmith company only completes work for lockouts or re-keys, you may want to search for another company. Any locksmith can pick a lock, but full-service locksmiths are the ones that are most invested in your security and safety. Full-service locksmiths can also provide better recommendations for your needs.
Get a Quote
Trustworthy locksmiths can give you quotes on pricing over the phone. If they’ve come to you, be sure to have them quote you before they begin doing any work. MOST locksmiths will charge a service call, then have specific pricing for parts and labor depending on the job. If you are out of the area, expect a mileage charge. If anything seems fishy on charges, be sure to clarify or take your business elsewhere.
Response, Availability, and Customer Service
Locksmiths, believe it or not, differ in terms of availability and specialties. For example, locksmiths that centralize lockouts and re-keys operate for longer hours. However, they are limited in their skill. Other locksmiths that specialize in commercial clients (restaurants, banks, retail, etc.), operate closer to a 9-5 schedule with overtime charges for after-hours. Almost every locksmith is available 24/7 regardless, but differ significantly in how you are charged and what specific work can be done.
If your pricing is not straightforward, whether provided by a dispatch team or a road technician, you’ll want to seek business elsewhere.
