How to Secure French Doors and Other Double Door Systems

by | Dec 22, 2024 | Locksmith Services, Residential

French doors and double door systems bring light and style into your home but also present unique security concerns. Their design includes multiple panels, glass inserts, and central openings that can be more vulnerable than single-door entries. Securing these doors requires hardware that addresses the system’s active and passive sides. This guide explains how to secure French and double doors clearly and effectively.

1. Understand the Door Setup

Double doors typically have one active door (used daily) and one passive door (fixed in place). The passive side stays closed using internal latches or bolts, while the active side usually includes the main lock. To secure both sides, you must reinforce each panel and control access.

If the passive door is not anchored properly, the entire system weakens. Intruders may exploit this by applying force or tampering with latches. Identifying the type of door setup helps you choose the right security components.

2. Strengthen the Passive Door

The passive door must remain firmly in place when closed. Without strong internal hardware, the door can shift, compromising the lock on the active side. Install flush bolts or surface bolts at the top and bottom of the passive door.

Flush bolts are built into the edge of the door and slide vertically into the frame and floor. Surface bolts mount on the inside face and slide manually into place.
Both options keep the door from moving when not in use. Flush bolts provide a cleaner look, while surface bolts are easier to install. Either option improves stability and prevents the doors from being pried open.

3. Upgrade the Main Lock

Standard knobs or levers do not provide enough resistance on double doors. Install a deadbolt or multi-point locking system on the active door. Deadbolts add strength by driving a solid bolt into the passive door or frame. Multi-point locks secure the top, middle, and bottom door for even greater protection.

Choose a lock with a Grade 1 or Grade 2 rating for front or rear entry doors. If the door has glass panels, avoid locks that can be turned from the inside without a key. Consider a double-cylinder deadbolt in these cases, but be aware of egress safety and local code requirements.

4. Reinforce the Frame

A lock is only as strong as the frame that holds it. Strengthen the strike plate with longer screws that reach the wall studs. For the passive door, reinforce the top jamb and floor plate where the bolts engage.

Strike plate upgrades include heavy-duty models with four screws instead of two and extended length for better grip. Reinforcing the frame adds resistance against forced entry and prolongs the life of your locking hardware.

5. Choose the Right Hinges

Exterior French doors often swing outward, exposing the hinges. If the hinge pins are accessible, they can be removed to bypass the lock. Replace exposed hinges with security hinges that include non-removable pins or set screws.

Alternatively, install hinges with built-in tabs that interlock when the door is closed. These prevent the door from opening, even if the hinge pins are removed. Hinge upgrades are low-cost and significantly improve door integrity.

6. Add Security Hardware for Glass Panels

French doors often feature large glass panes that can be broken. To reduce this risk, use laminated or tempered glass during installation. If replacing the glass is not an option, apply security film to prevent shattering.

Security film holds broken glass in place, making it harder for intruders to reach in or pass through. This step adds an extra layer of protection without changing the doors’ appearance.

7. Install a Secondary Lock

Secondary locks provide backup if the main system fails or is bypassed. These locks mount inside and can only be operated when you’re home.
Options include:

  • Slide bolts: Simple devices that slide into the frame or floor.
  • Bar locks: Devices that span both doors and prevent inward motion.
  • Door braces: Floor-mounted units that block the door from swinging open.

Use secondary locks when extra security is needed, such as overnight or while away for extended periods.

Key Hardware to Consider

When securing French or double doors, consider the following upgrades:

  • Flush bolts or surface bolts for the passive door
  • Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolts for the active door
  • Reinforced strike plates and longer screws
  • Security hinges with non-removable pins
  • Security film for glass panels
  • Optional slide bolts or interior braces
